Duquette Johnston & The Rebel Kings | Roll Baby Roll

Birmingham, Alabama’s Duquette Johnston pulls out this energetic, Delta Spirit-esque rock song for a 7” he recorded for Communicating Vessels. A quick look at his bandcamp shows that he’s been recording for a few years now - his March ‘09 It Sings Because It Has A Song is a slightly more lo-fi, acoustic affair (including the above track Roll Baby Roll in its earlier form) and 2010’s Rugged & Fancy, both of which are being offered entirely for *FREE*. Whoa.

He’s also got a fairly interesting back story. According to Duquette's artist bio:

For several years Duquette slipped into a dark place and found himself locked up in the Etowah County Detention center facing a very long prison sentence. By the grace of God he was given a second chance and released his first solo album Etowah, on Superphonic Records. In the present Duquette Just released a 45 on Communicating Vessels and is making a new record with The Gum Creek Killers to be released sometime this year along with a spilt 45 with Wooden Wand.

Roll Baby Roll above comes off the self-titled 7”, which also features the upbeat track Rise Up Children, both of which can be heard here and purchased here. He, along with other Communicating Vessels artists, can also be heard over at soundcloud. Stop by bandcamp and give him a listen!
